Design Tips from Cheryl Broadhead

Our Crown display homes in West Coquitlam are decorated with function and style to show home seekers the potential of a space. We worked with award-winning interior designer Cheryl Broadhead, co-founder of BYU Design, to create stunning displays. Broadhead is registered with Interior Designers of Canada and a LEED-accredited professional. She took time out of her busy schedule to share how you can incorporate some of the techniques she used at Crown.

Lighten up
“Lighting can make-or-break a space when it comes to function and feel,” says Cheryl Broadhead. A decorative fixture adds personality and softness to a room, while spotlights make it feel more industrial.

Mirror, mirror
Use decorative mirrors to reflect light, making a space feel bigger and brighter. Use a grouping of mirrors to add interest.

Soften with rugs

Area rugs are a great way to soften a space that has wood floors. They add pattern, texture and colour, plus they are useful for dampening sound.

Saturate to soothe
"Tone-on-tone palettes help open up a space visually to make if feel bigger,” says Broadhead. Different saturations of the same colour also create soothing spaces. This technique works well with any colour.

Display what you love
Don’t ignore the power of open shelves. "Open shelving allows you to display your treasures," says Broadhead. Display your favourite things to beautify and personalize your space. To avoid clutter, stick to a few choice items.

If planned properly, custom built-ins increase the function of a space dramatically. Crown homes have a beautiful server built right into the dining room wall, delivering both style and practicality. (See photo)

Strategize storage
Sufficient storage can make condo living so much easier. The homes at Crown have tons of storage, including hidden kitchen cabinets and customizable closets.
