How to Make the Most of your Entryway

Your entryway sets the tone for your home. It is the perfect place to add visual hints of what’s to come in the rest of the space.

Since this area sees so much traffic, clutter can quickly take over – and that’s certainly not the first impression you want! Here’s how to streamline your entryway to make the space functional and visually appealing:

Add a basket (or two)
Umbrellas, hats and sports gear can all make a mess of your entry; keep them contained in a pretty basket. If you have kids, try one basket for their things and another for your things to make it easier to find what you need in a hurry.

Hang it up
Install hooks, shelves, or hanging cubbies – anything that gets essentials off the floor. You will also want to spruce up wall space with some art or a mirror for those last-minute touchups. As a bonus, a mirror makes the space feel larger.

Strategic seating
Many people think a small entryway means they don’t have room for seating, but that’s not necessarily true. Opt for a high bench that allows for storage underneath - the perfect place to tuck those baskets - and hang coat hooks or a mirror above.

Look to the light
Lighting is essential in an entryway. A hanging lamp or chandelier can give you a wow-factor without taking up too much space. Coordinate your light fixture with the colour scheme of the space and make sure the light switch stays close to the door and is easily accessible.

Stop shoe spill-over
Unless shoes have a designated storage spot by the door, they will inevitably stay right where they were kicked off. If you have the space, add a shoe rack. Some other shoe storage solutions include an over-the-door rack, rubber trays or a shoe cabinet.

Think minimalist
Don’t let clothing and gear from another season take up valuable storage space in your entry. In the summer, pack winter coats away to get them out of your hall closet. In the winter, store sun hats and sandals elsewhere. Keeping only what you truly need on-hand will help keep the space clear.
