New Year’s resolutions for your home

Many people make personal resolutions this time of year. How about making some resolutions to improve your home? We’ve put together some ideas to make your space healthy, functional and beautiful in 2016.

Cut clutter
Clearing clutter is one of the best ways to feel better about your home. According to designers at HGTV, a cluttered home looks “dated and dirty.” The best way to streamline and clear clutter is to tackle one room at a time, getting rid of anything you don’t need or use, plus ridding your home of things that are broken or clothes that no longer fit.

Keep it clean
Make a cleaning schedule and stick to it. Put your clothes and dishes away every night and assign one deep-cleaning task daily to prevent tasks from piling up. For example, mop on Mondays and clean toilets on Tuesdays.

Detox
A few simple changes at home can go a long way towards eliminating environmental toxins and improving your overall wellbeing. Get rid of toxic cleaning products and unhealthy bedding. For more tips, check out our blog post on how to detoxify your home.

Go green
Resolve to add some indoor plants this year. They make your home look more “finished,” according to designer Stuart McCormick. They also help purify the air and “bring in new energy.” You can even grow your own vegetables. Some varieties can be started indoors in the winter and then transferred into larger pots on the patio when the weather warms up. Plants are also an inexpensive way to add colour to your home. Try coordinating plant colours with your décor!

As with any resolution, don’t lose heart if you can’t stick to it 100 per cent of the time. A little can go a long way!
