Stylish DIY Kitchen Storage Ideas

No longer are kitchens mere places to prepare our meals. As more and more people opt for open-concept layouts, they have become the place to gather, to entertain, and, of course, to eat. And, therefore, kitchens have become integral to the design of our homes, sometimes featuring impressive finishes like stunning artisanal cabinetry, oversized islands, stainless steel appliances, and luxurious granite or marble countertops.

However, as much as we now focus on the form, we still need to think about function in our kitchens. Oftentimes, that comes down to smart, efficient, and stylish storage of all our kitchen's many tools - pots, pans, utensils, flatware, china, spices, baking supplies, and more.

Here are a few DIY storage ideas to help you keep your kitchen in full function and in stylish form:

1. Towel racks aren't just for towels

This simple DIY will take you mere minutes to install and can provide you with a surprising amount of hanging storage space. Install towel racks in your pantry, on the side of your cabinets, or even directly in your cabinet doors. Here are a few ways to use them (see photos above):

- Hang your pots and pans
- Hang containers for cutlery and utensils
- Rest casserole dish lids directly on the rack

2. Make your spices stick

The easiest way to do this? A magnetic spice rack! You can buy a pre-made version, or you can quite easily create your own that can better express your own style. What you need: a sheet of stainless steel, small jars or containers, attractive labels, magnets, and some superglue. Read these how-to tips.

3. Put it all on display

Who says you necessarily have to hide your kitchen belongings in your cupboards and drawers? Create a unique feature wall by putting your tools on display. One of our favourite ways to do this is to create a pegboard display (as pictured above) which was originally made famous by the one-and-only Julia Child. You can spray paint it any colour you like and simply insert the pegs where you need them. Read these how-to tips

4. Get creative with countertop containers

There are endless options for countertop containers, from sleek and modern stainless steel to country-inspired milk jugs to converted vintage silver trophies (as pictured above). Whatever you do choose, remember that consistency is key in keeping your countertop display from looking like an afterthought. That could mean consistent labels (think chalk paint or homemade rustic labels), colour palettes, or materials (wood, metal, glass, etc.). Get creative!

5. Divide your dish drawers

Dishes and china used to belong in cupboards, but more and more kitchens are now designed with large drawers to hold your plates and bowls. To keep them from clanging against each other, install separators to hold them tight (as pictured above). Just make sure the drawer is equipped with quality sliding hardware that can hold the weight of dishes when the drawer is fully extended. Read these tips on a DIY pegboard version of dish drawer separators.
